Scenario Explorer
Overview
The Scenario Explorer is the central workspace within Data Trust Scenario Studio where all scenarios — FDR, Validation, TDR, BDV, and more — are created, organised, and managed. It provides a structured view of all scenarios grouped by folder, with quick-access controls for searching, filtering, creating new scenarios, and organising them into logical folder hierarchies.
Prerequisites
- You are logged in to Data Trust with a Pro-User or Admin Pro-User role.
Steps
Path: Data Trust › Scenario Studio › Scenario Explorer
The Scenario Explorer is the main landing page of Scenario Studio, listing all scenarios available to the logged-in user. Each row displays the scenario name, type, owner, last execution status, and last modified date, giving a complete at-a-glance overview of your scenario library.
The Refresh button reloads the scenario list to reflect the latest changes made by any user, while the Search field filters the list in real time as you type a scenario name. Use Search to instantly locate a specific scenario in a large library without scrolling through the full list.
The Show All toggle displays every scenario in the system regardless of folder ownership or user. Switch to Show All when you need visibility across all projects and teams rather than just the scenarios in your current folder context.
The Folders Only view collapses the scenario list to show just the folder hierarchy, hiding individual scenario rows. Use this view to navigate and manage the folder structure without the distraction of individual scenario entries.
The Content Only view hides the folder tree and shows scenarios as a flat list regardless of their folder assignment. This is useful when you want to scan all scenarios across all folders in a single scrollable view.
The column chooser panel allows you to select which columns are displayed in the Scenario Explorer grid. Click the column settings icon to open this panel and check or uncheck columns to customise the information shown in the list view.
Deselecting a column checkbox removes that column from the Scenario Explorer grid immediately. Hiding columns you do not need reduces visual clutter and focuses the view on the data that matters most for your workflow.
A Columns Saved Successfully confirmation message appears after your column preferences are stored. The selected column layout is persisted for your user account and will be applied the next time you open the Scenario Explorer.
The Scenario Explorer shows a loaded count vs total count indicator at the bottom of the list — for example, 25 of 120 scenarios loaded. This tells you how many scenarios are currently visible and how many more can be loaded from the full dataset.
When the scenario list exceeds the initial page size, the Load More button appears at the bottom of the list. Click it to append the next batch of scenarios to the current view without navigating away or resetting filters.
Creating New Scenarios
The Scenario Explorer provides quick-access buttons to create each supported scenario type. Each button opens the corresponding scenario builder pre-configured for that type.
Click the Create FDR Scenario button to open a new Full Data Reconciliation scenario builder. The FDR builder is pre-initialised with the source and target widget slots ready for you to connect your data.
The FDR Scenario Builder page opens with a blank canvas ready for configuration. Drag and drop data source widgets, define field mappings, add transformation rules, and configure email notifications before saving and executing the scenario.
Click the Create Validation Scenario button to launch a new Validation scenario builder. Validation scenarios evaluate datasets against business rules such as Null Check, Range Check, Pattern Check, and custom SQL expressions.
The Validation Scenario Builder opens with the data source and validation rules canvas ready for configuration. Add a data source widget, drag validation rule widgets onto the canvas, configure each rule's thresholds, and execute to validate your data.
Click the Create TDR Scenario button to start a new Technical Data Reconciliation scenario. TDR scenarios compare record counts, aggregate totals, or field-level data between two systems using Count Compare or Data Compare widgets.
The TDR Scenario Builder canvas opens with source and target widget slots and a Compare tab for adding comparison logic. Configure the data source connections, drag a Count Compare or Data Compare widget, propose mappings, and execute the scenario.
Click the Bulk Data Validation button to open a new BDV scenario builder. BDV scenarios apply multiple configurable data quality checks — such as Null, Duplicate, Range, and Regex — simultaneously across one or more tables.
The BDV Builder opens pre-configured with a connection and table selection interface. Select the tables to validate, retrieve metadata, configure the required checks for each column, and save before executing.
The Auto Generate FDR Scenarios button opens the import wizard for creating multiple FDR scenarios automatically from a mapping spreadsheet. This is the fastest way to set up bulk reconciliation when a column-mapping document already exists.
The Auto Generate FDR session page allows you to upload a mapping file, propose system mappings, and generate FDR scenarios in bulk. Review the auto-generated scenarios before saving to confirm that all source-target pairings are correct.
Click the Query Performance Testing button to create a new QPT scenario for benchmarking query execution times. QPT scenarios measure how long a defined SQL query takes to run and alert users when performance degrades beyond a threshold.
The QPT Builder page opens with fields to specify the connection, SQL query, and performance thresholds. Configure the query, set the expected execution time range, and save the scenario to begin automated performance monitoring.
Filtering Scenarios
The Filter feature in Scenario Explorer narrows the displayed list using one or more criteria, making it easy to find specific scenarios in a large library.
Click the Filter button in the Scenario Explorer toolbar to open the filter panel. Filters allow you to narrow the scenario list by criteria such as scenario name, type, owner, status, and creation date.
Enter the desired values in the filter fields — for example, type a partial name, select a scenario type, or pick a status. Multiple filter criteria can be combined to produce a precisely targeted subset of scenarios.
After applying filters, the Scenario Explorer updates to display only the scenarios that match all specified criteria. Active filter indicators remain visible in the toolbar so you always know the current view is narrowed — clear any filter to return to the full list.
Managing Folders
Folders organise scenarios into logical groups within the Scenario Explorer. Creating a clear folder structure makes large scenario libraries easier to navigate and maintain.
Click the New Folder button in the Scenario Explorer toolbar to create a new folder in the current location. Folders can be nested to build a hierarchy that reflects your project or team structure.
The New Folder pop-up window prompts you to enter a name for the new folder. Choose a descriptive name that clearly identifies the scenarios it will contain — for example, by project name, data domain, or team.
Click the Create button in the pop-up to confirm the folder name and create the folder. The new folder is added immediately to the Scenario Explorer tree and is ready to receive scenarios.
A toaster notification appears briefly at the top of the screen confirming that the folder was created successfully. The new folder is now visible in the Explorer tree and you can immediately move existing scenarios into it or create new scenarios within it.
